This affordable screen analyses over 70 genes which can be modified by diet, lifestyle and specific nutritional and herbal medicines.

The test costs $375 and includes a consultation with one of the naturopaths at the South Hobart Natural Health Clinic where we will review your test result and discuss what you can do to regulate the gene expression to optimise your health.

The test is painless, easy and quick to perform. You make an appointment with the clinic for the test. It is important that you have not drunk or eaten anything 30 minutes before the test. This appointment is just to collect the saliva for the test. When we have received the results, we will call you to make an appointment.

Michael was recently tested, and here is his lipid (fat) profile. It is not bad, he is not in a high risk category for cardiovascular disease provided he sticks to his good diet.

The selection of the genes involved in lipid metabolism is targeted to genes involved in HDL-cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), fat absorption, fat transport and the conversion and degradation of fat.

Dyslipidaemia (high fat in the blood) can have various genetic causes which are influenced by nutrition, alcohol and smoking. Michael has the LMT B.1 genotyp which has a gene frequency of 55-60% of the population and is considered to have neutral cholesterol profile and does not contribute to an increased risk of arterioslerosis (hardening of the arteries). The LMT B1 genotype benefits from a Mediterranean diet with lots of olive oil and one or two glasses of red wine a day. Lucky for Michael!

Michael would benefit from eating more plant sterols, soy protein, soluble fibre and fish. He needs to exercise, who doesn't?

Michael also has the APOC3 genetic profile which contributes to increased triglyceride levels and most likely increased LDL levels. Michael should therefore eat very little saturated (animal) fats.

And that is just some of the genes discussed in the panel!

This is Michael's detox profile. Michael is a fast acetylator of caffeine but the heterozygous CYP1Ba genetic profile is associated with higher enzyme activity and reduced detoxification. Michael needs to improve Phase 1 and 2 detoxification with cruciferous vegetables (broccoli family) and liver herbs. Michael has a good profile for glutathione conjugation capacity and will have reduced oxidative stress.

This is just a small part of the SmartDNA profile. The full report is many pages long.

The SmartDNA genetic profile test will help predict health problems and help you optimise your diet and supplement use to suit your genetic profile.

This will increase the effectiveness of your diet, lifestyle choices and any nutritional and herbal medicines you may be taking.
